Providing Care After Spiritual Abuse Counseling Toolkit for July 2023
Since 2017, #ChurchToo has shed light on numerous stories of abuse in the church. Many young adults who grew up in the church are deconstructing their faith. Abuse and deconstruction are often connected as people share their stories publicly. The topic of church hurt has become more mainstream over the last few years, as well. As people continue to speak out, some may be more open to seeking support.
Spiritual abuse is no less harmful than other types of abuse because we are body and soul and the things that happen to us impact both. The soul is wounded by the trauma of spiritual abuse and the body internalizes a sense of powerlessness, fear, and being controlled. How can we support someone recovering from this type of harm? This month’s tool provides a guide for how to respond when someone discloses spiritual abuse.
