Helpful Accountability for Sexual Addictions
Counseling Toolkit for March 2023
“Can you be my accountability partner?” This is a question most leaders receive at one point or another from someone pursuing freedom from their sinful sexual behavior. It can feel daunting or you may not know how to provide effective accountability. As you agree to journey with others, you’ll have more success if you remember the real problem! Carl Jung once said, “Every addiction is a misplaced prayer.” One of the pitfalls we face when providing accountability to others is we tend to focus on the behavior they are trying to reduce, instead of the heart matter that’s informing the problematic behavior.
Addictive behaviors are typically symptoms rooted in unprocessed pain and shame that need to be addressed. Knowing this, our accountability should help the person address the heart matters as well as the behavior modification. This toolkit will outline practical suggestions on how to provide helpful accountability for those seeking sexual integrity.
