Responding to Disclosure of Sexual Assault

Counseling Toolkit for November 2017

There’s a good chance someone you know posted the hashtag “#MeToo” on social media in recent weeks. The prevalence shouldn’t really surprise us as the statistics on sexual assault are staggering. Every 98 seconds, there is an assault. One out of every four women and one out of every six men are abused before the age of 16, usually by someone they know.

With more people speaking out about sexual assault or harassment, some may be more open to sharing their own story, perhaps for the first time. So what is the best way to respond if someone does make a disclosure of sexual assault? What can you do to help and how can you avoid making the situation worse? This month's tool provides a guide for response if someone opens up to you about sexual assault.
